Online Shopping has adverse effects on Local businesses. To what extent you agree or disagree with this statement?

Online shopping has become a trend these days. People are of the notion that increasing popularity of online shopping is a threat to the existence of local retailers. This essay will discuss the pros and cons of online shopping concerning its impact on local businesses.

One of the major advantages of shopping websites is that it avoids brokerage fees in the shopping business and, thus, it offers a better price than local shops. Local shops cannot afford to give away the goods for low prices since it has to divide the profit among its suppliers. For example, a mobile phone sold in a retail shop has to get the profit to cover its expenses to pay for their dealers, shop’s rent and employees salary; thus it will become costlier. Online shopping skips brokers in their business model and offers products for a cheaper rate.

A major drawback to online shopping is that the items can differ from the actual product the customer intended to purchase. This is mainly because the pictures of items on the shopping cart may mislead and the buyer may become a victim. During online purchases, for instance, we cannot verify the quality of products such as dress. Local shops display goods for customers inspection and ensure that it fully satisfies the customer with the product. 

This essay discussed the advantages and disadvantages of online shopping and explained how online shopping is replacing local business. Overall, even though the quality of goods may differ online purchasing can provide products which are cheaper when compared to local shopping which attracts more people towards online shopping and may adversely affect the existence of local businesses.
