Marriages are bigger and more expensive than in the past. Why is this case? Is it a positive or negative development?

It is the common fact today that large-scale marriages are becoming more popular than the olden days. It is obvious that the factors behind this trend are many and varied;

which will be shown by taking into account the reasons in detail, and how they have given rise to the situation more crucial.

In the first place, the main reason for bigger and expensive marriages is that now the wedding ceremonies are considered as a symbol of social status and gives reputation to the family name; because higher the marriage expenses, more prestigious the family in the society. For instance, people use unnecessary decorations, crackers, and noisy music on the wedding day to get more attention from the people living in their neighbourhood. But the reality is, luxurious marriage celebrations are fundamentally unnecessary and do not serve any special purpose to the marriage ceremony.

Next, looking at another major reason, it is clear that giving more importance to the celebration of the wedding day than the wedding relationship forms a major factor in disrupting the marriages. This is mainly because people spend more money to organise wedding functions and fail to provide the same kind of financial and social support to the newly married couples when they face a crisis in their life. For example, there is an increase in the number of divorces today than in the past, which shows that luxury wedding ceremonies do little towards strengthening the relationship of a newly wedded couple.

Lastly, the trend of imitating the marriage party pictured in movies form for a major reason for expensive and bigger marriages in recent times. The main reason behind this is, in movies the wedding day will be shown in an exaggerated way to attract its viewers and this makes the people find the cinemas costumes and decorations during their wedding ceremonies. To illustrate, people use the highest budget to hire the best videographer and photographer for their nuptials to get a movie like an effect in videos and photos.

After analysing the area of the major reasons, it is clear that it is an outcome of many factors. However, considering its effects on the wedding relationship and financial burden, I feel that it is a negative development.
